Whether you are having your first baby or third, if you have decided on nursing your child you will want to make sure you add a breast pump to your list of things you must have. As much as you want to be there for your baby it may be virtually impossible, especially if you decide to return to work while you are still nursing. It is advisable to get your baby acquainted with a bottle that is filled with your breast milk before you have to wean him or her off the breast milk and on to a formula.
There are several different types of breast pumps available and before basing your decisions on which ones you prefer, you may be able to choose one that is covered by your health insurance. A double breast pump has become more and more popular with busy moms but the price tag on some can be as much as $300, although there are plenty of different options available.
One of the benefits that have come as a result of the Affordable Care Act that was passed in 2010 was that you can rent a breast pump free of charge. There are no co-pays you have to come up with or deductibles you must meet first. Some insurance companies will not only cover the rental cost but some may actually cover the cost of buying your own breast pump and supplies.
If you purchased new health insurance after the Affordable Care Act went into action March 23, 2010 you have a good chance of being covered for your breast pump according to the new support provisions regarding breast pumps. If you are not sure about your insurance plan just give a call to customer service and have them check your policy.
You may have to get a prescription for your breast pump from your doctor or a midwife if you are using one. If your health insurance plan does cover breast pumps you will be able to rend a hospital-grade pump. If your policy covers the purchase of a breast pump it may just be for a manual pump.
You may or may not be able to select they type of breast pump you would like. If your insurance company does cover the cost of buying a new pump you may have to make your purchase from a medical supply company that they designate. They will either provide you with the name and number of the supply company that they use or direct you to companies that are located in your area.
The good thing is if you use the medical supply company they use, all you have to do is find the breast pumps that are included in the coverage, order one, and it will be delivered right to your door. You should begin to start your search for your breast pump before you actually need it. It may take time going through the health care channels, especially when insurance comes into play. Don’t give up, it is covered; just spend the time to get the right one for you.

I agree that breast pumps needed when you plan to breastfeed. I still remember when my Zd was 2 months old and I don’t have breast pump nako ang sakit ng boobs ko kasi punong puno ng milk. Napakahelpful nito.

In retrospect, I should’ve really invested on a reliable and efficient breast pump. We had difficulty breastfeeding as my little one simply won’t latch. We could’ve sustain breastfeeding if we had a good-quality breast pump that allowed us to collect and store breastmilk.
Amazing! I didn’t know this at all! I didn’t invest in an expensive pump, only a Pigeon electric pump, because I had the privilege of breastfeeding directly but this is awesome news for pumping mamas!

Not aware of this kind of coverage. I just had my old breast pump replaced and bought a new one. SHould talk to my insurance provider. Thank you for this. This is sometime of value to me. 🙂
