Health Tips to Pass on to your Children

grown up stuff, children's health, tips + tricks
one of my favorite healthy activities is playtime!

Many people believe that children are the future. They represent the next generation, include the next batch of world leaders and are the ones who will continue to make the world go round long after we are gone. Therefore, it is our duty to pass down to them the advice and wisdom we have learned, as well as the skills and practices we strongly believe could benefit their lives and maybe even their children’s lives after that. It is also important to pass on health tips to ensure they live a long, healthy life; health is wealth after all and a lot of people often forget that nowadays.

Give Blood

When you give, you receive and giving blood is no exception. Often, people have a misconception that it’s only the one on the receiving end that benefits from blood donations. In fact, donating blood has its benefits for the donor too. It can help people who are trying to lose weight, since donating a pint of blood burns a good 650 calories plus, regular donation also lowers a person’s chances of getting afflicted with heart-related diseases. For women, donating cord blood or the blood still in a baby’s umbilical cord after birth, is exceptionally beneficial. Cord blood is rich in stem cells similar to those found in bone marrow, which can be used for patients with cancer or blood-related illnesses. Pregnant women can ask for their cord blood to be stored publicly for the use of others or privately, if ever the need arises. Either way, joining the cord blood registry could save a life. Whether that is the life of an unknown person from the other side of the country, your neighbor, your child’s or your own, each is equally important.

Eating Breakfast

Doctors and other health specialists have always encouraged people not to skip meals, especially breakfast. Breakfast gets your day off to a good start and gives you a much needed energy source to start the day. It jump-starts your metabolism, helps you wake up and focus your mind and can even helping you maintain or lose weight. By eating a healthy, balanced meal in the morning, you are more likely to feel satisfied which will prevent you from binge eating at lunch or snacking in between meals. Not everyone can face a big breakfast the moment they wake up so if this is you, try taking something to eat on your journey to work such as fruit or yogurt. Watch out for sugary bars and cereals, as these will give you a short-term energy boost before your sugar levels drop again mid-morning resulting in tiredness. Instead, try protein rich foods like eggs or a hearty bowl of porridge to keep you going longer.

Exercise Regularly

This cannot be stressed enough, especially nowadays, where we live such fast-paced lives. When people struggle to make time for a necessity like breakfast, it’s not a surprise that exercising regularly gets thrown out of the window too. When people think of exercise, they usually imagine big heavy weights and machines at the gym or endless running until your legs fall off. But that doesn’t have to be the case. If you enjoy the bulky gym equipment then by all means go ahead but the key is to simply keep your body moving. Instead of driving or getting a taxi to your destination, walk there. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or the escalator. 10-20 minutes after eating, take a slow walk around the block to help with digestion. Take your bike to work instead of the car. All simple changes that will soon become habit and may actually be an enjoyable part of your day. Not only will exercising give you more energy and help you lose weight but it may even lower your fare!

It is never really early for us tots to develop a healthier habit that we will take up to our adult years. It is also one of my mum’s goals to raise me to be not only physically fit but a healthy kid, too. I may not be donating blood anytime soon {but am sure we’ll be doing that one of these days as mum included that in her bucket list}, but a regular exercise is something we can work on now. Maybe I should join mum on the mat when she finds the time to stretch and do her yoga.

A Beautiful Front Porch Thanks To Christmas Lights

There is going to be lots of Christmas parties and reunions this year. One of these events is most likely going to occur inside your humble abode. Because of that, not only do you need to plan the party ahead of time, you should also take care to welcome your guests properly. Since the front porch is one of the places the visitors will see first, you have to focus your attention there. Here is how to do it.

Decorating the Front Porch

The Pillar Of Beauty ~ You may not be paying attention, but your front porch contains a column. Use it to your advantage. Hang the Christmas Lights you bought from www.christmaslightsetc.com/christmas-lights.htm there however you wish to. It can be parallel to the ground, or in a circular manner. You can even use different colored lights to make a statement. All of these will entrance the guests when they gaze upon it.

Colorful Poinsettia ~ Poinsettia’s are a thing of beauty. They are considered indoor plants, but you can easily put one in your front porch by using an artificial model. You can buy these on the mall which are widely sold during Christmas season. Hang the Poinsettia around the doorway and decorate it with Christmas Lights to make it more noticeable.

Hello Icicle Lights ~ Aside from the twinkly lights and cascading lights that you often use, you can also go for icicle Christmas Lights. They are white in color and simulate the feeling of having snow in your front porch. This is perfect if it does not snow on your place, but it can also be a good contrast to real snow, so you can always use it even if your whole neighborhood is coated with the stuff.

Ho Ho Ho Santa ~Who better to greet the guests than Santa? If you have a model Santa in your home, take it outside and put Christmas Lights all around it.

Be the star this Christmas by decorating your front porch with Christmas Lights. The presentation and decoration in a party is as important as the food and entertainment so do not leave this out.

These sure are nifty tips on how you can decorate your porch and transform it into one thing of beauty that is sure to serve as a great welcome to your visitors and guests. We do not have a porch, but in lieu  of it, we have this welcoming Merry Christmas decor in our front door as our way to greet those who are thoughtful enough to visit, I think that will do.

School Children and the Health Issues They Face

guest post, grown up stuff, children's health
with my teacher + playschool classmates

During their school years, children’s immune systems are put to the ultimate test. The school is often a place where huge groups of children gather. This makes it a large breeding ground for bacteria and other disease-causing organisms. Although most illnesses can be considered as minor issues, there are major diseases and contagious health problems that occur.

Here are some of the most common health issues that school-aged kids face along with how you, as a parent or guardian, can help your child avoid them.

Head Lice

Head lice are little crawling insects that nourish themselves by sucking human blood from the scalp. They thrive and multiply in human hair and their eggs are usually attached to the shafts of the hair behind the ears or at the back of the head. Although lice only cause discomfort and not a major health risk, they are still considered a risk because theyare easily spread from one child to another. This means, if left untreated, it doesn’t take long for an entire school to become infested.

Treating lice can be a bit complicated because although physicians can prescribe an anti-lice shampoo, some lice have become resistant to the pesticide. Lice can definitely be removed, however, by properly using a prescribed treatment or seeking help from a professional lice removal in Orange County. To prevent the spread of lice in schools, parents must be willing to notify the school if their child has lice so that the teachers can take the necessary measures to help your child and any others that have been in close contact, get the treatment they require.

Fifth Disease

A mild rash is a common symptom of Fifth disease but it is also characterized by sore throat, body ache, slight fever and headache. The distinctive red rash on the body can last for a few days. Since it comes only with a mild fever, children often do not feel unwell when they develop a rash. However, one important thing to remember about Fifth disease is its linkage to stillbirth and miscarriages. This means that when a student is suspected to suffer from Fifth disease, the female members of staff, especially the pregnant ones, should be notified immediately so that they can take precautions.

Chicken Pox

Chicken pox is yet another viral illness that is common among school-aged children. This disease, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, is characterized by itchy red spots, which usually appear all over the body and face. To avoid the spread of this disease in school, a child with chicken pox should not be allowed to go to school for at least a week after the rash first appeared. The child is safe toreturn to school once all the blisters have dried and crusted over.

Your childs health must be of the utmost importance now that they are attending school. They spend most of their time there and although teachers and the school try to ensure that all children learn in a safe and secured environment, health issues may still occur. To help prevent this, parents need to make sure that their children get good nutrition and care to limit the risk of their child catching a contagious illness.

It sure is difficult to maintain a child’s health especially when one goes to school where there are many other children to get ailment + diseases from, that is why it is a must that mums put stock on our health, by making sure we have up-to-date vaccinations, a healthy eating habit + administering vitamins + other food supplement. Trust our mums to rest on nothing to make sure that we are always in the pink of health!

Tips When Shopping For Toddlers’ Shoes

guest post, grown up stuff, kids fashion, tips + tricks

the funky grom trollop in cool red color

It is that time of the year again when mum is planning to get me a new pair of shoes since the Christmas season is just around the corner. If you must know, I do not normally wear shoes. I am mostly clad in my sandals as I prefer to wear them whenever we are out and I guess mum agreed that they are the most comfortable for my feet. So, I seldom wear my pair of rubber shoes and always opt for my comfy sandals before heading out the door. For this year, though, mum is considering to get me a pair of shoes from Reef, or similar shops, for a change. Brands like this have the style and sensibility of shoes while giving your feet the comfort of sandals, just perfect for rowdy little boys like me!

Shopping for toddlers’ shoes can be quite tricky but here are a few tips from mum you might want to keep in mind the next time you go shopping for your little one’s footwear:

Go For Comfort

Little boys and girls loves to move around a lot, and it is rather difficult to be our fun and boisterous way when we are moving about in tired and aching feet, that is why comfort is the first thing you need to consider whenever you plan to buy us shoes! Opt for those brands and styles that are made of soft fabrics and similar material that will protect our little digits without hurting them. Mum’s top pick is this cool and groovy pair of Grom Trollop slip-on shoes. It sure resembles her own pair of slip-ons, so we can go out in our matching shoes!

Consider Style

Of course, mums want their kiddos to be this little fashionistas, so they would always opt for those kid-friendly, yet stylish brands that will make their little ones look awesome! Going for shoes in different colorful shades would be ideal, but it is also important to stick to some of the basic and general colors that will go well with your little ones’ clothes. This Grom Soulwolf‘s neutral shade is a perfect example, as they will go so well with any little boy’s wardrobe.

Let the Little One Choose

Nothing excites us more than to have a say in any decision our parents make, so make sure you get the little ones’ opinion and consider it before making a purchase. The trick is to give us a couple of different shoes to choose from to make your job easier. Narrow your choices and let us pick which of the pairs we’d like to bring home, it will make us look forward to wearing the item knowing that we chose it ourselves. Plus, it also allows for everyone to enjoy the shopping experience to the fullest!
